The first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (Mercury COP1) will be held from 24-29 September 2017 at the International Conference Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. Regional and other consultations will be held all day on Saturday, 23 September and on the morning of Sunday, 24 September, with COP1 scheduled to begin at 3pm on Sunday.
The Minamata Convention on Mercury entered into force on 16 August 2017 with ratification by over 50 countries. Delegates attending COP1 are expected to consider a number of issues regarding matters stipulated: under the Convention, by the Conference of Plenipotentiaries for the Minamata Convention, and by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee. These include, among others, matters related to mercury supply sources and trade, emissions, financial resources and mechanism, compliance and effectiveness evaluation.
A High-Level Segment, hosted by the President of Switzerland, is set to convene from 28-29 September, under the banner “Making Mercury History,” where high-level delegates are anticipated to celebrate their commitment to the Convention.
